Gary Owen claimed the 2018 West Brom Open by defeating the reigning Big Smash winner Matty Stewart 15 in the final. Matty was ahead early doors but then Gary went 16-10 up on a round peg and kept the advantage till the end. Gary had ended Ian Wassall’s fine run in the Semi Finals after beating him 8, while Matty had a great match with favourite Callum Wraight of Castlefields, winning 19. Callum had been 5-0 down before hitting back to lead 12-9 and 17-13 before Matty got lucky with a fire and took advantage to lead 20-17 in the corners. Callum got two though and lead a great bowl down the clubhouse edge but didn’t make two and Matty struck his bowl off to get game. Callum had given a masterclass on his trademark length to lead former winner Simon Coupe 14-0 and kept the advantage to win 8. Gary had beaten Sam Millward 7 in his Quarter Final, after getting past Paul Lamb and Martin Lloyd comfortably beforehand. Matty had defeated Reece Farr 18, Chris Worthington and Mark Burdett to get to the Semis. Only Dan Petcher of Netherseal, Paul Lamb of King George V, Elliot McGuinness from Georges and Wrockwardine Wood captain Martin Gaut won a game from our league in addition to Callum.
