Woodfield still unbeaten, Nordley back to form
Woodfield are still unbeaten in Gameweek 6 of the Summit Garage Staffordshire Premier Bowls League. They won at Short Heath Libs 9-3 to continue their perfect start. Skipper Nick Newey explains how the match went. “We felt this was an opportunity for us but we were delivered an early setback as Craig Barker beat the in form Stuart Jones to 6. Fortunately our first four have all enjoyed happy times on the Short Heath green over the years and we quickly racked up a 12 shot advantage after 4 ends with Lyndon Hazlehurst beating Aimee Allcock to 14, Martin Orme beating Gary Bateman 14 and Nick Newey beating Jason Williams to 9. The lead was extended to 16 with Mick Hill beating Kris Johnson 17 and duly earning the MVP. For Short Heath a glimmer of hope was offered as Steve Powis turned a 12-4 deficit into a 21-14 win against John Newey. This left Claire Pugh and Chris Marshman on the green and the difference was 9 in favour of Woodfield. Claire found herself up against some terrific bowling from Tim Allen who won the MVP and came of winning 19. With 7 in the match, the pressure was on the last pair but Chris Marshman held his nerve and finished off his game with Tony Rhodes with a 21-19 win. The result was a hard fought 9 shot win to Woodfield and 5 winners too.” Stretton Anglesey are clear in second place now after beating Broomfield 9-1. They were close to a full house as Chris Chilton prevented the whitewash with a 20 win to earn him MVP. For Stretton it was Jason Anguish that was best winner and MVP for his 8 win.
Willenhall Nordley B have moved into third place as they got back to form in beating Sutton Park 9-1. Captain Bill Pitt knew “we needed a good home performance and good points to put us back in the mix. We applied ourselves really well and to be fair we also had the rub of the green in a couple of games including mine. However, we did live up to our own expectations and very nearly had a full house.” Chris Sadler prevented the full house 18 to win MVP, while for the home side it was Wayne Jones’ 5 win that got him best win and MVP. Wrockwardine Wood have leapfrogged Netherseal by a point in fourth after beating them 7-3. Josh Cotton won 4 to be best winner, but Ang Gaut got MVP for her 16 win. For the Derbyshire visitors, it was Richard Staley who was best winner 9 with Brian Jordan getting MVP for his 12 win. Baldwin have drawn level with Langley after beating them 8-2. Paul Whitcombe earned their best win with his 9 card, but Paul Baller got MVP for winning 10. For the visitors it was David Buttery who won 7 and Sarah Beaman 14, with Sarah gaining MVP.
Woodfield are 7 ahead of Stretton Anglesey, who are 10 ahead of Willenhall Nordley. Nick Newey is the only unbeaten player out of 6 in the league.
