Gameweek 17 Review – Premier Division

King George V earn vital win, St Georges continue good form

King George V earned a vital win in their bid to avoid relegation as they defeated rivals M&B Cheslyn Hay 9-1 in Gameweek 17 in the Premier Division of the Summit Garage Staffordshire Premier Bowls League. Captain Jason Galvin says “we knew we had to get at least 7 winners on the night and I know we did it but the score didn’t refletc how well M&B played. We could have easily had 3 losers in the first four but thankfully we got out of it 3-1. The back 4 was the same really we was all down but battled back well to get out of it with 7 winners. It gives us a chance but will still be tough when we go to M&B Cheslyn Hay in 2 weeks time.” Best winner was Tom Pritchard 10, with Jason himself getting MVP for winning 18. M&B captain Aaron Tapper was their winner, 15, to earn MVP. Tanworth In Arden have a slim chance of staying up but would need a win on Dudley Dell to give themselves a chance. They beat them 6-4 at home, with Simon Dreher best winner and MVP 5. Jason Westwood was best for the Dell 12, but Craig Cartwright got MVP for winning 16. St Georges beat Moor Lane 9-1 to put them back in trouble. Captain Pete Grimston commented “it was a fantastic win, a really good win against a team that we didn’t really know much about. The lads did really well against a very good team. To be fair Moor Lane were quite unlucky not to get more from the last four. Lewis Scott, for us, against Jack Whitehead was very entertaining, some great play! We can go into the last game trying to seal fourth place, and that is a good season for us. We’ll all take that. A month before the season started we didn’t have a team and didn’t know if we’d be able to play in the league so I’m really happy with where we are and how we’ve done. After all, this is one of the hardest leagues you can play in.”

The top remains the same, but Willenhall Nordley have joined the George in being two points behind the Greville Arms. They beat the Greville 8-2 to give themselves a chance if they can win on the Greville. Captain Scott Simpson led the way with his 10 win, also getting MVP, while Steve Wallace was likewise for the visitors with his 13 win. The George got 2 at West Brom FSC to put a dent in their hopes. Phil Clinton was best winner and MVP for them 5, while for the home side it was Kevin Hickman who was best winner 11 and Rachel Bennett MVP 16, which keeps them in the hunt for the top four.

The Greville Arms are two points above the George and Willenhall Nordley. Tanworth In Arden are two behind M&B Cheslyn Hay, and another point behind Moor Lane. Elliot McGuinness now leads just on aggregate from Tom Pritchard at the top of the League Averages.
