Castlefields clinch unlikely promotion!

Castlefields clinched an unlikely promotion as they won 9-3 at Chadsmoor. Considering they were in and around the bottom two for most of the season, and looked like dropping out at the start of July, it was an incredible turnaround, starting with an 11-1 win at Great Barr back at the start of August. They started the better of the two teams, with Callum Wraight 16-6 up and keeping that lead to win 11. Chadsmoor fought back in the other games, Shelton Orpe leading about 13-8 and Dave Rhodes around 12-6 up, with Kevin Keary and Dave Lloyd level at 13 across. Dave Lloyd then played some excellent stuff at the end to win 16 and earn himself MVP for the Fields. Shelton held off a fightback from Adie Rowe at 13 across to win 14. Jon Palmer kept plugging away against Dave with some excellent striking, and from about 16-13 down managed to win 17. This left Castlefields 3-1 up and 12 up on aggregate.

They didn’t let up with Tom Palmer 14-1 up on Stuart Edwards on a 30m round peg, and Keith Wall 6-0 up on Cliff Johnson on a shorter round peg, which meant they were about 36 up at one stage on the green. But Chadsmoor dug deep, and Stuart Edwards from 17-6 down played some great stuff to come back to lead 20-17. However Mark Taylor had a good break at the end against Dave Hayward from 11 across to win 13 and lead by 20. But Cliff Johnson from 15-6 down played some excellent stuff on a 30m round peg himself to come back to lead 16-15,  and Pete Cookson led 9-0 and 15-6 against Keith Walton last on playing well. Tom managed to fire Stuart off at 20-17 and then scored a lucky single next end, but Stuart got himself one next end and seal the MVP. This left Castlefields 17 up, and with Keith Wall being 17-16 down and Keith Walton 15-9 down it meant they needed one shot to seal the win and promotion. And Keith Wall did that next end and managed to win 17 in a high quality game. Pete Cookson finished his game off 14, but it was not enough for Chadsmoor who suffered their second successive relegation.
