The George and Dudley Dell have qualified for the finals day of the BCGBA World Club Championships, but both had contrasting paths. The Dell had to overcome fellow Summit League side Stretton Anglesey in a thriller as just one chalk separated them. Captain Nick Wyer says “after 3 ends we were 15 up with Nathan Dawes playing brilliant to win to 8. In the middle we struggled a little so with the back 2 on we were level. Steve Shaw fought back well to win 16 which meant I needed 17 to get us through. It was 20-15 to Conor Chamberlain and he had a bowl 6 inch on side mine was a yard through and his other was 3 foot on side. It was 3/4 length corners so played a runner into the jack, which flicked off his nearest bowl and followed the jack for 2 and the game.” They took on Ravine of Lancashire in the qualifier and it wasn’t plain sailing. “In the qualifying game although being 2 down after 4 and 12 down after 5 the back 3 of Craig Cartwright (best winner 10), Steve Shaw and myself all won comfortably halfway to secure the win.” The Dell play Ashton in the last 8 on Sunday 14th April.
The George had a comfortable passage through to the last eight, where they have a tough game against Thongsbridge to come. They hammered Marehay by 63 in their first game, Gareth Herbert continuing his run of form winning 2. Wolstanton defeated Castle Sports by 35, Paul Charlesworth their best 9. The George were in impressive form again in their second round game as they got past Wolstanton by 31, Phil Clinton the best of their 7 winners with his 8 win.
Well done to both sides!
