Premier Division

The George start their defence of their title as they host newly promoted Moseley CC in week 1 of the Summit Garage Staffordshire Premier Bowls League. It will be a baptism of fire for Moseley, but they will know the green well as they look to get a good start. The Greville finished second last season by the narrowest of margins and face a tough opening game at Willenhall Nordley, who finished third last season and have title aspirations of their own. Skipper Andy Nuttall knows “it is a difficult place to go and a tough start against some quality players this early in the season.” Castlefields are the other newly promoted team and host a West Brom FSC team that have lost one of their better players in Rob Carter, but have plenty of experience in this division. Dudley Dell lost their opening home game last season and will not want a repeat against Moor Lane, who impressed in their first season back in the league last year. M&B Cheslyn Hay have made the best signings of all the teams with the addition of Cliff Johnson and Kevin Keary from Chadsmoor, and will want to hit the ground running against St Georges.

Division One

Stretton Anglesey will be looking for back to back promotions and travel to Penn first game as they try and get to grips with more new greens. With their green unsuitable to be played on at the moment, the fixture has had to be reversed. Captain Paul Chamberlain says “Firstly I’d like to thank Penn for “reversing” the fixture. It’s going to be a hard game as all away games in this league are. We have a strong team out and a few of our players have been on Penn so I’m hopeful of a good result.” Penn will be looking at promotion and with the addition of Rob Fuller and Dave Rhodes will be in good shape to achieve that. Woodfield came up in second place and have made three excellent signings in Pete Cookson, Stuart Edwards and Sean Lockley as they host the Royal Oak. The Oak were denied promotion at the last moment last season and will use that as motivation as they look for promotion into the Premier Division for the first time this season. Netherseal also came up, and host a Ward End Cons team that have lost a couple of players. Tanworth In Arden came down last season and will be looking to bounce straight back up as they go to Windmill, who finished 4th last season. King George V, former champions of the league, will start their unfamiliar position in Division One with a trip to Great Barr, who looked in good place to win promotion before a shock home defeat against Castlefields

Division 2

Heath Hayes start their life back in the League when they host Broomfield. It is a totally different team to the one that was in the league a few years ago, but new captain Steve Wright is looking forward to the challenge. Short Heath Libs finished 4th last season and will want a better start that prevented them from finishing higher as they host Sutton Park. Langley were another team with a poor start as they lost at home to Broomfield last season first game, but entertain a Willenhall Nordley side that will be looking for promotion. Skipper Bill Pitt comments on “a tough start to go to Langley for our first game but we have to try and be positive to pick up useful points.” Wrockwardine Wood have lost some of their regulars and will be up against it versus Baddesley who have signed some useful players to add to their youth in the side. Baldwin are the team with the first bye.
