George start off with whitewash, Nordley win away, Atherstone start well
The Champions the George started off with a whitewash over Tanworth in Arden as they started their quest to retain the league well in week 1 of the Summit Garage Staffordshire Premier Bowls League Premier Division. Captain Elliot McGuinness said it was “a great win for us on Monday against our friends from TIA. Although it’s great to start with a 10-0 win it was an evening where we realised there’s a lot more to life than bowls with the recent loss of Barry Maskell. Our condolences are with everyone at TIA and Barry’s closest friends.” The league and Summit Garage would like to echo Elliot’s comment. Elliot himself was best winner and MVP 2, with opposition captain Stuart Bishop MVP for getting 19.
Willenhall Nordley also started off well to regain the league title with a 9-3 win at M&B Cheslyn Hay. Skipper Dan Bodley said it was a “great win for us boys on Monday, always a good healthy rivalry with the M&B lads. It’s a green we fancy doing well on when we go there and we picked up 9 points for a great start to the season.” Richard Bate was best winner 10, and Paul Evans MVP for winning 19. For the home side it was Jordan Picken best winner and MVP for winning 5. Atherstone Cons started off their debut season in the league with a great 9-1 win over Moseley CC. Captain Tom Lea said “Monday was a good start to the season for us on our new home green. Despite the time of year it still had some pace in it and allowed our players to use their knowledge of the green to put Moseley under pressure from the start. There were some good performances in there from the likes of Harry Chapman (to be best winner and MVP 5) and Jordie Baddeley. Looking forward to the reverse fixture next week.” The winner for the away side was Scott Follis 9 to earn the MVP award. Stretton Anglesey made a strong start to beat the Greville Arms 8-2. Ian Brown was best winner and MVP 9 for the hosts, with Callum Mitchell and Nathan Caines winners for the visitors 18 and 19 respectively, the latter winning MVP. Windmill started life back in the Premier Division with a 7-3 win over West Brom FSC. Daniel Green was best winner and MVP 8 for them, with Simon Homer’s 10 win being best win and MVP for the away side.
