Week 13 Review – Division One

Woodfield get big win, Boldmere all but there

Woodfield got a massive 9-3 win at neighbours Penn in week 13 of Division One of the Summit Garage Staffordshire Premier Bowls League to put themselves in the promotion race. Captain Nick Newey says “we arrived at Penn last night to see the green quite green in colour and looking to be a bit of a reach. The first 4 kicked off, and Joe Dicken broke away quickly and took command of his game, finishing strongly and beating Jacob Ash to 8. John Newey did the opposite, succumbing to a 1-12 deficit and rallying back to get 14 against a very dogged Ron Justice. Meanwhile, Lyndon Hazlehurst got slowly out of the traps trailing Jon Heath 2-10 before playing some outstanding bowls to lead 19-14 before hitting a brick wall and ending on 19. Chris Marshman earned his first MVP of the season, beating Penn captain Darrell Handley to 20. Chris pushed into a 14-8 lead before Darrell forced his way back into the game to tie the game at 20 before Chris found the one he needed to get his win. In the back, Rory Rollason took good early control of his game racing into a 16-10 lead, before the impressive Mia Benton found her mojo to level at 16, before Rory got over the line, winning 17. Cheryl Caswell struggled from the start against the impressive Mick Hill, playing against his old club. Mick forced his way through the game, leaving Cheryl on 4, what turned out to be an MVP performance. Nick Newey took early command against the likeable Tim Benton, zooming to an 11-0 lead. Tim nowhere near his best rallied a few shots, before the Woodfield captain finished the game off leaving Tim on 3. Lee Bevin was left on the green alone, and after a few early alternate rallies, Fez led 18-12 before Bruno Heath rallied to 15 and then Lee closed the door on a 15 win. A good match, played the right way and Woodfield taking the spoils 9-3 with an 16 shot win.”

Boldmere Sports & Social are all but promoted now with a 9-3 win at Victoria Park. Skipper Adam Weaver says “We managed to get off to a great start with the lads picking up the weight of the green straight away resulting in us having 3 of the first 4 winners, Matt Grundy leading the way with some excellent bowling and a 21-9 win first card off (to be best winner and MVP). Into the second half we managed to defend the lead with some tightly fought games to give us the win we wanted that now puts us in prime position to win the league and a chance to cap off an excellent season!” Best winner for the Park was Pete Cookson 6. Langley edged out Hamstead 6-4 by just 3 chalks. Kris Norgrove was their best winner 12 with Stanley Beaman MVP for winning 15. Richard Parkes was best winner and MVP for the visitors 11.

Boldmere Sports & Social Club are 11 ahead of Woodfield, needing just two point at home on Monday to be promoted, and three to be champions. Woodfield are 7 ahead of Tanworth in Arden with one game left away at Victoria Park on Wednesday 20th August, while Tanworth have two home games on Monday and Tuesday 19th August, needing 20 points to mathematically guarantee them promotion without having to rely on Woodfield’s result on Wednesday.

Matthew Grundy is one win ahead of three players, and knows a win on Monday will mean he wins the League Averages. Nick Newey and Pete Cookson are on 4 MVPs each.
