Short Heath top, Wrockwardine scrap home
Short Heath are top of the Summit Garage Staffordshire Premier Bowls League after their 9-1 home win over Sutton Park. Captain Tony Rhodes commented on “a good team performance for the first game of the season. A game played in the right spirit and atmosphere.” Best winner was Lee Hulse 10, with Des Parsons MVP for his 11 win. For the visitors it was Rick Green who won 19 to be MVP. Wrockwardine Wood scraped in against Baddesley with a 7-3 win by just 2 chalks. Captain Martin Gaut explains how the match went. “We went 3-1 up in the first 4. Josh Cotton was exceptional and used the green really well to beat Harry Chapman 21-12. Carl Wilkins of Baddesley found the green well and didn’t give John Clarke much of chance to win 21-5. Allan Gaut played a tidy game to win 14. Performance of the first four was probably Steve Downs, he played his first game for us on Monday. Michael Lynch played well to lead 16-6 then Steve completely turned the game around, only letting Michael score one more! Into the back four and a MVP performance from Baddesely’s George Chapman, he played a medium length weight changing round peg and he was immaculate. Ange scoring 1 fully represented the way in which he played. I made the most of the green to break up Tyler Dewis’ weight and won 7 (to earn MVP too). I’m not sure about Louise Cotton’s game but it was an important 21-9 win to keep us in the match. Tony Garmson rallied well to get the shots we needed to win the match. A close match and a good test for the first match of the season. I was very pleased to get a win out of the night. Onwards to next week and another home match.”
Heath Hayes started life in the league with a 6-4 win over Broomfield by nine shots. Geoff Wylde was best winner 7 but Malcolm Gittings was MVP 17. For the away side it was John Wilson who was best winner 12 and Joe Wilson MVP 16. Langley started this season better after beating Willenhall Nordley B 8-2. They had two 3 winners, Chris Lambert and Kris Norgrove, with the former gaining MVP too. For the visitors it was Mark Hall 14 and Rich Bate 17 who won, Rich getting the MVP.
