Tournament Preview
Tomorrow sees the return of the prestigious Les/Mel Evans MBE Invitation Classic for the second time at its new home. The first Crown Green Bowling green visited by Mel as a six month old baby with parents Doreen and Les. We have once again amassed a fabulous field of 32 quality players, a mixture of old faithfuls, debutantes and arguably the games number one player currently Callum Wraight. The stand out game in the top half of the draw is the very first match of the day – one of Staffordshire’s finest players Scott Simpson versus reigning champion Michael Beer. Also in the top half of the draw we see an All-Shropshire clash with seasoned campaigner Stuart Rutter play debutante and reigning Shropshire Merit Champion David Lloyd. The bottom half of the draw sees Callum Wraight paired up with Derbyshire’s Conor Chamberlain, another player making his debut in the event. The last game of the first round is a battle of former Waterloo Champions, with Jon Palmer versus Greg Smith.
The stage is set. The green has an excellent playing surface thanks to Greenkeeper Colin Hayward who has done a stellar job to get the green in the best shape possible following a very wet March.
Hot and Cold refreshments will be available all day, along with a full bar service. All players and spectators are assured of a very warm and hospitable welcome on what is always a special day on the calendar.
On behalf of Les, Mel, my family, Heath Hayes Bowling Club and myself we wish everyone venturing to Cannock a safe trip and an enjoyable day.
All proceeds from tomorrow will be donated to MND research.
