West Brom cause upset, Stretton & George win away
West Brom FSC inflicted the first home defeat on the Greville Arms in over seven years in week 6 of the Summit Garage Staffordshire Premier Bowls League. Captain Matt Hocknull says “we were chuffed to win away against a very strong outfit. Strong performances from Andy Saunders (best winner 10), Chris Watts, Mike Hill (MVP 12) and Rachel Bennett gave us a great platform to land the win, with Jason Cooke seeing us over the line at the death.” Best winner and MVP for the home side was Darren Round 3. The George picked up a big away win at the Windmill 10-2 to please skipper Elliot McGuinness. “A great win on Monday from our team on a testing surface. We’re not known for being the most level headed of individuals but we all stuck in and managed to get a really promising result to enable us to go a few points clear at the top of the table. Massive respect to the Windmill for sticking together, I’ve never known the green to be anything other than exceptional and it’s a shame what’s happened which is totally out of their control. Good luck to them for the rest of the season.” Elliot himself was MVP for winning 20, with Nathan Dawes best winner 12. Daniel Green was best winner and MVP 10 for the home side.
Stretton Anglesey were the third team to win away this week, 8-4 at Moseley CC. Captain Paul Chamberlain says it was “a close game as they always seem to be home/away against Moseley. Particularly pleasing as we took 3 players who hadn’t seen the green. Enjoyable game as normal, great bunch of lads at Moseley.” John Dewey was best winner 12 with Darren Carter MVP for winning 13. For the hosts it was captain Scott Saunders MVP and best winner 13. Atherstone Cons had a good home win 8-2 over Willenhall Nordley. Willie Beal was best winner 9 and Jordan Baddeley MVP for winning 10, while for the visitors it was Dave Semper best winner and MVP 15. Baldwin followed up their away win last week by beating Hamstead 7-3 at home. Emily Kernick was best winner and MVP 3 for the hosts, and for the away side it was Joe Bown best winner 12 and Ben Harris MVP for winning 20.
The George are 8 ahead of Stretton Anglesey who have a game in hand, and another 5 ahead of Willenhall Nordley. Hamstead are 7 behind Windmill and another 3 behind Baldwin. Elliot McGuinness leads 7 other players on 5 wins. Darren Round leads the MVPs with 3.
