Triplex take big stride, M&B edge home, Park edged out
Triplex took a big stride in earning promotion as they won 10-2 at Langley in week 12 of Division One of the Summit Garage Staffordshire Premier Bowls League. Chris Bergin was best winner 11 with captain Chris Baker getting MVP for winning 20. Mike Tunstall was best winner and MVP for the hosts 5. M&B Cheslyn Hay won 8-4 at Belmont Services to consolidate their second place in the table. Best winner and MVP was Jordan Picken 11, with Darren Staley best winner for Belmont 13 and Matt Fearn MVP for winning 14. Victoria Park missed out on a big away win as they lost by 3 chalks despite having 5 winners at Woodfield. Woodfield skipper Nick Newey describes the action. “We welcomed our friends from Victoria Park on Monday to play out our game on a soggy night. The green was squelchy underfoot but still totally playable. Victoria Park field quite a strong team littered with current and former county players and we knew we would need to be on form to get over the line. The first four saw Samantha Murray drop into the pace of the green quite comfortably and although she had a few ends in John Newey’s drain, she saw the game out winning to 18 and rightfully won MVP for the visitors. Lyndon Hazlehurst enjoyed an epic encounter with the war horse that is Gordon Hawkins with Gordon getting in with 18 win, conditions were definitely not favourable for Lyndon. Mark Atkins, who has struggled on Woodfield in recent weeks found conditions to his liking and with the help of a bit of Betts Bowl Grip saw off the impressive Chris Lester to 19. Last in the shed from the front 4 was the ever improving Joe Dicken who easily won MVP for Woodfield beating a very unlucky Stuart Edwards to 14, Woodfield 3 up after 4. In the back, Nick Newey saw off Tony Gill to 4, Tony never really managed to pick up the pace of the green. Rory Rollason came off with 13 against the very reliable Chris Ward. This left Woodfield 12 up with two on the green. Young Archie was 7-19 down against Nigel Hodgkinson and Chris Marshman was 14-16 down against the recently crowned Staffordshire Champion Peter Cookson. Defeat was calling, but young Archie gathered another 6 to reach 13 and Chris pulled out a few shots he will be telling us about over a drink for the next few years, to get to 20 before dipping out. So Woodfield win by 3.” Tanworth in Arden defeated Penn 8-2 with Mark Williams best winner and MVP 7 and Reece Farr the same for the visitors with his 12 win.
Triplex are 9 ahead of M&B Cheslyn Hay, who are 2 ahead of Victoria Park. Reece Farr leads Darrell Handley and Gordon Hawkins on 9 wins, while Reece is also on 4 MVPs with Jordan Picken, Steve Darling, Peter Cookson and Rory Rollason.
