Week 4 Review – Division One

Baldwin win away, Hamstead earn solid home win

Baldwin provided the first away win of Division One of the Summit Garage Staffordshire Premier Bowls League in week 4. They won 10-2 at Belmont Services to set down the first marker of the season. Captain Jim Kernick said “considering the rain, the green was in decent condition. A small amount of surface water soon disappeared and bowling started a little later than normal. Obviously a great result for us to come away with but thanks must go to Belmont and Brian Jordan for agreeing to play it. It would have been very easy to cancel early doors and not give the green chance to drain, which it obviously did. We put our chuckers on first to see out the worst of the conditions. Fortunately that worked well and Nathan Crocombe (MVP and best winner) bowled superbly well coming off first winning to 7. Two further wins from the Newsomes meant the front four had built up 3 wins and a decent lead which fortunately we managed to hold onto going into the back four. We finished with another 3 wins and an overall plus of 20 shots. We are under no allusions that Belmont is a difficult place to come and get a result under normal circumstances, and obviously on the day, the weather certainly played a factor and helped us in gaining the allusive away win.” James Southern was best winner and MVP 5 for the home side. Hamstead gained another good home win with a 8-2 success over Triplex. Joe Bown was best winner 5, with Richard Parkes MVP for winning 10. Daniel Baller was best winner for the visitors 4, but Alan Darling got MVP for winning 14. The other two games at Victoria Park and Woodfield were postponed because of the weather.

Baldwin are now four clear of Hamstead, and another 2 ahead of Triplex, with all three having played a game more than all but one of the rest. Emily Kernick is top of the League Averages with 4 wins.
